The Law of Subtraction?

If you’re reading this, chances are that you’re familiar with the concept of the Law of Attraction, which states that “like attracts like”.  It refers to the idea that our thoughts, fueled by (and in concert with) our emotions, create our life circumstances.  In other words, positive thoughts bring positive things to us, whereas negativity breeds more of the same.

This is certainly an easy-to-understand idea (if not to implement, for most people).  It evokes analogies like preparing a beautiful place in order for beauty to fit into our lives, or for enjoying and being grateful for what we already have, in order to show that whatever abundance comes along will be well-regarded and valued.  Not too tough to understand all that, in theory.

Another school of thought (a refinement, really), revolves around being “in the flow” of abundance – in other words, removing whatever it is that’s actually blocking the good stuff .  In my framework, this a more accurate staging of the principle.  “Attraction” implies that whatever it is that you want may exist, but it exists in some other place…and so you need to attract it to you like some kind of polarized force – a magnet of sorts.  But being “in the flow” states that you are allowing the positivity to flow to you (or you to it).  Again, it is implied that the abundance is elsewhere, and you need to either go to it, or have it brought to you.

I propose an alternative to either of these ways of looking at the idea of “manifesting”.  I call it the “Law of Subtraction”.

According to my Law of Subtraction, since All is One, everything you desire (or don’t desire) is already created.  If All is One (including you), then there is no need to “attract” anything…or to “allow” it to flow to you, because it’s already here – you just don’t see it.

I believe that all probabilities and possibilities already exist…there is no ongoing creation.  Consider the idea of the observer effect in quantum physics.  The awareness of a consciousness (or Consciousness itself, as I believe), affects what is seen to be existing in  “reality”.  If the perception of the observer changes, so does the reality of that which is being observed.

The very word, “manifest”, isn’t synonymous with “creation” (as in starting with nothing); to “manifest” is to be made apparent…to become visible.  Therefore, when we manifest we are not creating anything; we are simply revealing that which was already there all along.

The veil that we, as incarnated and un-ascended beings, live under has a purpose.  Our physical, emotional, and mental bodies (and indeed our spiritual bodies in their current stage of awareness) simply aren’t built to experience the All at once.  Indeed, even experiencing just a little too much more than we are able to comprehend is damaging, as demonstrated by persons who are diagnosed with schizophrenia or other psychosis.  Faced with the All would cause our individuality to evaporate instantly and we would cease to exist – or at least be unable to function as individual beings.

So, the reality we perceive is based upon filtering out a large portion of Reality – the All of what is possible.  It’s a lot like a succession of filters being put and held in place.  We only are allowed to see the tiny portion that’s useful in our present form.

However, we do have some degree of  control over which filters are kept in place.  Over the course of a lifetime, through our beliefs and perceptions, we remove and add filters, trying to obtain the ideal view of what we want our reality to look like.  Remove too many, and we cannot survive because the data influx is too much for our systems.  Put the wrong filters in place, and we simply cannot see (manifest) that which would serve us best.

I maintain that in the effort to manifest abundance, wisdom, or whatever else it is that we want, we need to not only  remove the filters that are blocking our seeing the object of desire, but also, we need to put filters into place that will remove the destructive or negative visions that obscure what could be ours instantly.  The abundance we seek is already there…we need only to adjust our field of view in order to see it.

  1. Thanks Pansy. After this dratted Mercury retrograde is over at year’s end, I begin my book in earnest – and this stuff will be a part of it.

Thanks so much for taking the time to comment.

  2. Michael, this is better put, than most books and all the websites out there. Please built on this, I think that this is the right way of looking at the total picture.

  3. Right you are, David. Just need to filter out what’s not “right”.

  4. Thanks Johan. I have other theories along these lines and will expand in the future. Peace out.

  5. What a great way to look at it Mike. The law of subtraction…Love the concept!

  7. Good post Michael, I agree, too many times what we desire is just in front of our eyes, maybe a different shape, a tiny different color, but just a hand away. Because we are trapped into believing that what we want is going to come from somewhere “out there” we fail to see that in many ocassions, it has been always right beside us.
