Quantum Spirituality

Some of us have the ability to “just believe” from the get-go when we first begin to seek something outside ourselves. These fortunate souls simply dive in and sort it out later. If that goes well, they’ll eventually filter out what doesn’t seem to be true for them, and come to their own solid belief system. If the process doesn’t go well, they’ll end up sampling everything they see – and just as would happen at a food festival, this will lead to a bloated, useless feeling… the potential enjoyment lost to overindulgence.

“What do you believe?”   ” I believe you’re trying to drown me…!”

blech…

Indeed, tasting a huge variety of practices in a short period can easily lead to a kind of spiritual indigestion. When none of those ideas and concepts have time to be absorbed, one can easily become sick of them. My brother and I once bought a large bag of non-nonpareils, and polished off the entire bag in one afternoon; that was 50 years ago and I still gag at the sight of the things.

At any rate, if none of the spiritual things “work”, we may reject ingesting them altogether. In fact we can experience such a rejection that we vomit up all the ideas that have made us feel sick, and vow to never indulge in spiritual seeking any more. A pity, but understandable.

In my own case, I was arrogant enough to demand some kind of logic and validation when it came to spiritual concepts. I’m nobody’s sucker (usually). But my innate wisdom told me that there really was something “out there”. I just had to approach it in a way that would not leave me with a whole big bucket of doubt and therefore a lack of authenticity – which is of paramount importance to me. No bullshit, please.

Back door man.

I began with a simple concept that opened the way for me: only I get to decide what to believe. No religion nor society or group of people or teacher could tell me what to think. Sure, they could point the way, just as I do with my own students now. But in the end, it’s my mind, my life; mine to steer as I think best.

I then proceeded with science and its relationship with the myths and legends and high concepts I was reading about. As it turned out, this was the perfect way – for me.

The first and most simple recognition came with the idea that “we are all connected”. Of course we are, and with every piece of matter in Reality. I’m sitting here, made of mostly empty space, my atoms and molecules buzzing around in the right way to make me appear to be solid. In the meantime, my particles are interacting with the particles that make up the air around me and the various radio, TV, solar… you name it… energy waves, which in turn eventually interact with your particles. So even in this simple sense, we are literally all connected.

The Zero Point Field was an early interest. The field suggests that the above connections extend out to where there is no air or other solid matter. It seems to be a manifestation or extension of consciousness itself in some ways. My intuitive understanding is that there’s some link to so-called “dark” matter and energy here. Science has reverse-engineered the concept; by observation and theoretical deduction, the mass of known physical elements and energy within the universe does not equal the sum total mass of the universe. In fact, observable mass is only 5% of the total. Say what?

My intuitive understanding right now is that dark energy and matter are the stuff that dreams are made of – our consciousness, our thoughts are what mold it into something from nothing. This neatly fits the spiritual concept that abundance is unlimited. We only need get our conscious and subconscious ducks in a row, and presto – matter.

imagesThen there’s what Einstein endearingly (and derisively) called “spooky action at a distance” – quantum entanglement. Actual experimentation has lead some to conclude that once two quantum particles interact, from then on one cannot be measured without also measuring the other – they become “co-particles”. If we ourselves in every sense are simply patterns of energy and particles, it’s not much of a leap to where telepathy and psychic intuition are simply a result of some kind of entanglement.

On an even more basic level is the uncertainty principle – if you’re measuring the mass of a particle, you cannot simultaneously observe its energy. Therefore, there is no certainty available in this most basic realm of reality. Our conscious minds cannot be certain of anything. Now, although this can be simply a manifestation of the limitations of our human form, it also provides a blueprint for life itself; nothing is certain. Nothing can be accurately predicted, and grasping that idea is the beginning of wisdom.

What makes a human body a human body? We carry the same molecules, the same carbon and nitrogen and all the other elements and compounds as, say, a lizard. Sure, on a large scale there are rules that say that a human cannot give birth to a lizard. But where did that framework of the lizard or the human come from in the first place? How do the molecules themselves know how to build that living thing? My sense is that there is an unseen blueprint for everything, and that what we see as matter is simply a sheet draped over that blueprint, giving it form.

I could go on; I’m not a physicist by any stretch, and my level of understanding of any of these things definitely doesn’t involve mathematics. But I do believe that what science is learning now will lead to a better understanding of what we call “spirituality”. Even things like the concept of “love” may someday be reduced to a formula (as much as many of us would find that distasteful). But one would do well to remain open minded to all perspectives. If love is indeed a frequency explainable by science, would that really change anything? Would you stop loving simply because it’s now not “woo-woo” enough for you? The ultimate truth is in seeing our truth as it is, even if it shatters our preconceived notions.

  1. Hi Debbie,

Yes, I would say that the DNA (that we can see) of living things is a manifestation of our blueprint. Then, everything must have a blueprint, and you could call that DNA; however, the “DNA” part is a description of the chemical makeup specific to a species. But it’s a convenient term to use as shorthand.

  2. That’s very true, Christina. Our souls are evolving just like our species are evolving. Eventually we may progress to the point where we can see all of this clearly on our own… and then, there will be even more mysteries to seek.

  3. Hi Edgar,

What I like to tell people is that in terms of subatomic particles, they might have been part of Hitler’s mustache years ago. 🙂

  4. Hahaha I don’t know if it is a coincidence that these past couple of months I have been reading a lot about some of the things you mention in this article. When I first heard that we were all in fact connected I could not understand very well the concept; however, when someone wrote how the same building blocks that my own being (and everything else) is composed of comes from distant stars, that when I look at the sky I am in fact looking at the same thing that is you and me, it all made sense.

  5. Hi Michael. I love your topic. I’m an advocate of science and spirituality and I love talking about the two of them together.

To me, spirit, the infinite, source, energy, whatever you feel comfortable calling it, simply is. It is what makes us, and powers the workings of this physical universe and all things in physical existence. For a long time, at least in the age of modern man, we have had to rely on faith and belief. Though some of us just knew that there was something more to life than what we could physically sense, we could not explain it. Our physical senses were only designed to see, hear, touch, taste and smell an extremely limited bandwidth of frequencies.

Science then told us there is more out there, UV waves, microwaves, radiowaves and so on, frequencies that were measurable but that we couldn’t see with our physical eyes.

Then along comes new science: quantum physics, epigenetics, neuroscience and so on that is beginning to be able to explain what we weren’t able to explain before. The oneness connection, long-distance healing, why our thoughts, intentions and prayers can change the world, the power of the mind and its ability to heal the body, I could go on.

I believe that intuition, our ‘psychic’ senses and abilities, which all of us have, allows us to sense those energies in the universe that are definitely out there but that our human senses do not allow us to. Since we are spirit in a physical body, it is only natural that we have spiritual senses that accompany our physical senses. We just haven’t learned to use our spiritual senses well because the times we were living in did not support it, so a lot of us aren’t used to trusting it.

In these exciting times of burgeoning spirituality however, where many people appear to be waking up to who they truly are, I’m not surprised to see that even science is beginning to become involved. More people are now ready for a deeper connection to spirit, and science is one way to reach those groups of people who need to see to believe. These are really great times we are living in.

Hello Michael isn’t the ‘blueprint’ you speculate about which creates our individual form actually DNA. I like the way you explain it as matter being ‘simply a sheet draped over the bueprint’. And yes l agree work and fun can be one and the same thing.
    Cheers Debbie
