Many of us have an urge to figure out the “why” of life. Why are we here? Is there really a Life Purpose for each of us…any real meaning to our very existence? The proverbial existential conundrum.
The idea that we have a specific, individual mission in life is appealing; I believe it’s true. I also think that the process of trying to find out exactly what that Purpose is results in valuable opportunities for growth.
But that process can go on for entire lifetimes. It’s good to have a drive, a passion for something…a hero’s quest. But sometimes without any guidance, we spend that lifetime seeking purpose but never consciously living it. And that’s a shame.
The reason that a solution to the “life purpose” question is so hard to come by stems from many of us misunderstanding the basic concept. The vast majority of people in our culture who even think about the topic at all, consider their purpose to be their career, their job, or profession. They have the typically human idea that “purpose” is connected with usefulness or productivity or how they support themselves. Of course those things can be a part of it, but they don’t need to be.
We have free will, which is one of the greatest blessings (and curses) of our particular system. It gives us power and responsibility. We’re here to have many kinds of experiences and to learn…and it’s free will that allows us to do that. But we do have a mission and it is very specific in one sense, but can be manifested in an almost infinite variety of expressions.
Boiled down to the bones, your Life Purpose is to express your Divinity; that part of you that is eternal. We are all One with All, but in our current form we have individuality, and individual gifts and knowledge that are projected from our non-physical selves: our soul. These gifts are energetic…each based on a particular “flavor” of energy, be it Love or Wisdom or Truth-saying or any of a myriad positive attributes.
So, since these gifts are pure energy, they can manifest in pretty much any form that you with your free will desire.
An example: perhaps one of your primary soul-level gifts lies in the fourth chakra…the heart. One of the aspects of your mission here, then, is to express love in all of its permutations and combinations. That’s fine, but how do we do that? Must you be a Mother Theresa or a Ghandi, a nurse or therapist? No. You can express and teach love anywhere. You can be a maid or a nurse or a mechanic or an engineer; and simply by the way you live your life, you teach and distribute the energy of love. That’s your mission.
The expression of your authentic Divinity, no matter what you choose to do in life, will provide much fulfillment. As noted, your occupation may or may not be directly or obviously related to your native gifts. So then we again come up against the question of what to do. There’s a very simple process to find this out: what appeals to you? What do you enjoy doing? Naturally for many of us this takes a bit of trial-and-error – sometimes years of it. But when you set your intentions to find the work that will work best for you, that will support you abundantly (both financially and in learning experiences), and will allow the expression of your authentic Self, you’ll find it. You just want to keep an open mind and be flexible.
May you find not only your best path, but also may you realize your true mission within this lifetime.
